Cleaning your iron

Ealing Repair Cafe has a travel iron that was kindly donated for our sessions but it has gained marks on it.

Yvonne, who volunteers at our sessions has a great and simple solution, paracetamol. Yvonne makes beautiful quilts and discovered this through one of her groups, as quilting can use a lot of starch on fabrics and this can build up on the iron.

How to clean your iron with Paracetamol?

  1. Turn the iron on to hot setting
  2. Using tweezers or pliers to hold paracetamol
  3. Gently rub the paracetamol on the iron, being careful not to scratch the iron with the pliers / tweezers
  4. Using a kitchen towel or a cotton rag rub the marks off. You may have to go over it a few times if there’s a lot of build-up. Hopefully leaving you with a lovely shiny iron.

If you have any other sewing tips, please send them through to us.
